Monitor your playground

Each year, about 200,000 children are treated in emergency rooms for injuries related to playground, most on school or public playgrounds.

It is imperative that school officials monitor their playgrounds to make sure they’re safe. This can be done by:

* identifying equipment that has caused an injury and correct the problem or remove the equipment
* remove any equipment not recommended by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, such as multiple occupancy and rope swings
* ensure that adequate depths of surfacing material exist below each piece of playground equipment
* identify all tall equipment that requires a landing surface and remove it unless tested surfacing is available
* adjust playground borders to accommodate CPSC layout guidelines
* repair any damaged equipment
* conduct a comprehensive playground safety audit
